The Care Design Lab is an incubator (Broedplaats) where art, innovation and care come together. The project was founded in 2021 with the support of the City of Amsterdam, and Zadelhoff Beheer BV. The mission is based on the belief that makers drive progress in society and increasingly take on the role of researchers.
Care Design Lab is located in one wing of a former hospital recently transformed into Het Slotervaart — a center for professional care and cure. Our unique space invites artists, designers, and engineers to meet and create. With an emphasis on experimentation and community, residents work towards a healthy, social, and future-proof world.
The Lab offers 21 comfortable studios and a number of flex workspaces. Other facilities include spaces to organize workshops and group activities.
The Care Design Lab has created a community working on caring for the future with a focus on caring for ourselves, caring for each other, caring for the world. Each sphere calls attention to a main discipline such as mental and physical health, social design and sustainability.
The Lab's mission is to offer spaces with unconditional creative freedom. To achieve this, its commitment to care knows no bounds. Insights from makers and organisation alike have proven to be broad and rich, finding expression in projects powered by technology, inspired by nature, and rooted in social engagement.
Within these themes, public exhibitions are developed by internal and external curators. Our space is available for you!
"Het Slotervaart is back as a place where care and people come together. Care providers are given plenty of space, clients find care at all possible levels and local residents meet each other. Together, we are building a healthy foundation with a fresh outlook on care and the future."
